The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings Rec
So I am going to do something I never do, which is to rec a 300k, Teen Rated, WIP. I know. But it is the most beautifully written thing I've read in a long, long while.

It's in the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings fandoms and it blends those two storylines so perfectly I swear to god it reads like actual canon. It's Bilbo/Thorin and Gimli/Legolas pairings, but like I said, it's a PG-13 rating, and it's not at all explicit, so if you are at all interested in Middle Earth, I would recommend reading it even if you aren't a fan of the pairings (TBH I've never been sold on Legolas/Gimli, but I sort of am now).

It was written for this prompt at the hobbit meme: [prompt]So why was Gimli the dwarf chosen to attend the Council of Elrond? Well, I'd like to think it was because someone pushed him to do so and things went from there. But who? Why, the dead members of Thorin Oakenshield's Company, of course!
Their ghosts/spirits/visions/phantoms have been attached to Gimli since they got word that Frodo, the cute little nephew/cousin of their own Bilbo, was going to end up on the quest to destroy the Ring. So as a favor to their still living Hobbit burglar, they vow to protect Frodo anyway they can, which ends up being through Gimli. Unfortunately though no fault of Gimli's own, he's not with the young hobbit as much as his Elders would like, which in turn makes them very irritable and annoying for as long as hobbit and dwarf are separated. So yeah. Overprotective!Oakenshield Company haunting Gimli to ensure Frodo's safety.

That's the general gist, but it's so much more than that. The characterizations are fucking fantastic and the dwarves are especially wonderful. The fic starts right after the BoFA and right now is up to when Gimli, Legolas, and Aragorn start down the Path of the Dead. I honestly cannot do this fic justice trying to explain how much I adore it. We get to see both the quest/fellowship of the ring and what was happening in Erebor during LoTR, we get to meet so many dwarves(I'm especially happy about all the kick-ass female dwarves!), we get to see Legolas and Gimli and their antagonism and how it evolves into friendship and then more and it's so achingly beautiful and believable. We see Thorin struggling with his guilt over the gold-sickness, his heart-ache at realizing Bilbo was his One far too late, his resolve to protect Gimli and Frodo at all costs. There is a large cast here and every single man, dwarf, hobbit, and elf jumps right off the screen. The research that went into this is just staggering. It's honest to god perfection.

I know most of you on here are not really in the LOTR/Hobbit fandoms, and reading WIPs is risky business anyways, but I just NEED somebody else to read this, because it has consumed my life these past three days. To the point where I am just talking about it with my RL friends trying to tempt them into reading it.

Hon, 300k at the moment? You are just reccing such a treat to lead us all into temptation. :)
But if I follow you on your way, I can't finish the erised fics I still haven't read (which are more than I would like to).

LOL, I know, I picked the worst time to read it. I wasn't even planning too,but it kept calling to me!

Seriously, if you ever have the time, I cannot recommend this highly enough! SO GOOD!

Argh. I love long fics, so that's a perfect rec for me. Torture, because I just don't find the time right now. Thank you, sweetheart!

If you can make time for it eventually, I cannot recommend it enough! <3

I have that novel now seen recced a lot, and I trust you blindly, so I am tempted to give it try. But could you tell me how the hobbits in general, and Frodo/Sam in particular are portrayed? I understand they are side characters in this story, obviously.
wicked smut goddessgracerene on December 30th, 2014 08:20 pm (UTC)
I was thinking about you as I was writing this, because I know you're a LOTR fan, but more on the hobbit-y side of things.

The hobbits are definitely side characters, and I'd say there is probably a smidge more Merry and Pippin once the company parts ways, since the focus is more on Gimli, but they are still there. There isn't much of a romantic focus on Frodo/Sam (at least not yet) but you definitely see their bond, especially Sam's unfailing loyalty. And we see them when the first capture Gollum, and when they are caught by Faramir etc, so we do see them throughout.

I personally think that the hobbit are really captured wonderfully and while dwarves are certainly the focus of this one, hobbits are always on their mind, both because of the quest, and because of Bilbo. Thorin is pining after Bilbo, and all of the dead company are really set on protecting Frodo and the hobbits. And Merry and Pippin remind several of Fili and Kili and that playfulness and brotherly affection.

LOL, not sure if that answered your question! But I'd say even though the dwarves are the bigger focus, the other characters/races are definitely not neglected, and I think the love the author has for all of the characters really comes through. :D

Thank you. You did answer my question. :) I will give it a try. Not sure if I can read and enjoy it. I obsess so much more about canon compatibility with Tolkien than i do with HP. Thorin/Bilbo still sounds ridiculous to me. Sorry, sorry, sorry ... :D I'll let you know.

Yeah, I would have never shipped Thorin/Bilbo based on the book, that connection is all from the movie.

If you do read it, I'd definitely be curious to hear your thoughts! I think the author does a fantastic job fitting it into canon, but probably more with the movie canon than the books (they do a pretty wonderful job incorporating both, but definitely more of an emphasis on movies, especially for the Hobbit movies). And I'm certainly not as well versed as you, so any possible discrepancies are probably more easily missed by my eye.

Have to say, I've always been more of a Legolas/Aragorn shipper myself, but this still sounds good! I might have to give it a go in the new year, maybe read a bit at a time - I find I can read any pairing if the writing is good enough and sells it to me well enough tbh. Thanks for the rec!
wicked smut goddessgracerene on December 30th, 2014 08:30 pm (UTC)
Oh I am all about that Aragorn/Boromir! :D

Yeah, I was a bit hesitant about the Legolas/Gimli, but it's so gentle and gradual and believable that I was just sitting there nodding along going "Yeah, this is perfect, they are amazing." And I am 1000% behind Thorin/Bilbo, so that was a no brainer!

But yes, the writing is so, so good. So well-researched and characterized and honestly, I think it's best consumed over a longer period of time, just so you can digest the awesomeness.
Reckless Passionlauren3210 on December 30th, 2014 08:58 pm (UTC)
... I have just been sitting here for the past 5 minutes blinking, because I never even considered aragorn/boromir before you mentioned it and i couldn't work out why. And then I realised, basicaly all of my ships have one blond dude and one with messy dark hair and i don't know what to do with this sudden revelation tbh. i have no idea what this says about me.

Ahem, sorry don't mind me, just having a sudden epiphany and thought i'd share, lol
wicked smut goddessgracerene on December 30th, 2014 09:06 pm (UTC)
LOL! That's awesome, I love having those revelations! Actually...I'd say most of my OTPs follow that same mold...Johnlock, Stony, Drarry, Thilbo, Spirk (well Spock's hair isn't messy, but it's definitely dark!)....OMG

The only big one that really doesn't fit for me is Clark Kent/lex Luthor, but Lex is bald so....

SO WEIRD! Why is it that blond guys and dark-haired boys always have such delicious chemistry??

Reckless Passionlauren3210 on December 30th, 2014 09:31 pm (UTC)
I DON'T KNOW!! But I've been thinking really hard about this, and Marvey is the only one that doesn't fit the mold, because Mike is the one with messy hair and he's blond, and Harvey is more of a dark blond than anything, he just uses way too much gel, lol! Oh, also Sterek, because you can't rely say that Stiles is blond. But literally every other ship I can think of - I'd say Erik Lensherr is light enough to qualify, wouldn't you?

nia_kantorka: pic#124335177nia_kantorka on December 30th, 2014 09:34 pm (UTC)
All the hair products lets Harvey's hair look much darker. Counts, doesn't it? ;p
wicked smut goddessgracerene on December 30th, 2014 09:48 pm (UTC)
OMG, how did I forget Sterek! Okay, they don't qualify, but I'd totally say Erik is light enough to make the cut! ;)
nia_kantorka: pic#124335177nia_kantorka on December 30th, 2014 09:32 pm (UTC)
I've needed to think about the hair thingy in my fav slash pairings. Dark hair. Yes. Probably always if you count black and dark brown hair. Blond. Nope, not always.

But I have a thing for bright eyes. Yes, give me all the blue, green, grey, turquoise, violet, or amber eyed boys. LOL

OMG, Sansukh is one of my favourite fics ever. It's beautifully written, very well researched, and perfectly characterised. It's so heartbreaking and so funny and gah! I love it to pieces. It's well worth a read even though it's unfinished and a long way from being done.
wicked smut goddessgracerene on December 30th, 2014 08:34 pm (UTC)
Right!?!? I never read WIPs and I certainly never read something so long without any smut, but holy cow is this worth it. It's honestly one of the best things I've ever read, it seriously fits so effortlessly into canon, it's insane!

So glad I'm not the only one under it's spell! <3
welcome to villa cariño!capitu on December 31st, 2014 01:09 pm (UTC)
Single-handedly you've turned me into a hardcore shipper. Adding this to my to-read list!
wicked smut goddessgracerene on December 31st, 2014 07:19 pm (UTC)
YES! I love converting people!! :D

Definitely let me know if/when you read it! It's soooooo good!
this mundane stuff called lifewinnett on February 9th, 2015 05:33 pm (UTC)
HI! I'm reading this too! Emansil pointed me to you. I just finished this trilogy (really, it is) and am BROKEN for waiting for the next chapter.

I was never into the LOTR fandom before... the last Hobbit movie... Something inside me shifted and I wanted to read these stories about these characters. And I found this fic and saw the fanfair it's received and began reading.

I love how she focuses on the Dwarves, who come to light so much more than in the books. (and yes OMG the research and awesome kick ass female Dwarrowdams)

This fanfic is moving, it's got great character growth, and had me in tears in several occasions. I wish it wasn't 'over'. I'm not sure how much more is planned (enough if she's finishing the LOTR books) nor how often she posts anymore, but I wish I wasn't caught up.

I plan on re-reading the Hobbit and LOTR now, because of this fic. I feel trapped in Middle-earth and I don't really want to get out.

And so, I just want to say... I know EXACTLY HOW YOU FEEL. I have been talking to RL friends about it too. My boyfriend is all 'are you still reading that?' but my talking about it has gotten him to re-read the Hobbit and we went and bought the Silmarillion, which I have never read.

anyway, I hope you don't mind if I Friend you. I'm mainly a HP fandom person, but am kinda inhabiting my own little corner of Middle-earth now.

I really need a middle-earth icon.

Always happy to have another person to squee with!

Yes, this fic is so unbelievably amazing, but luckily the author is pretty decent about updating. Since I posted this 6 weeks ago, there have already been too lengthy chapters added. I know that she at the very least plans on going to the end of LoTR, and I cannot wait to see what she comes up with! :D

The good thing about this being a lower rated fic, is that I don't have to feel weird about my gushing to everybody I know. My poor roommate always gets an earful. I actually did the same thing when I read the Silmarillion last year. It's so crazy how fleshed out Middle earth is, that every time I read a new chapter about something cool happening, I'd tell my roommate all about it. :D

But yes, new friends are always welcome! I'm in a ton of fandoms, and while I'm mainly an HP person as well, I've got a lot of fandom love to go around!
